20 May 2012 (Bye Bye Library folder)

May 20, 2012

Last night I was clearing out caches on my computer like I do every week, and I don’t know if I was more tired than usual or maybe it was the wine at dinner, but I apparently clicked on my whole Library folder and sent it to the Trash rather than just the Cache folder inside it. After I hit the “Empty” button (above the reminder that “this task can’t be undone”) I noticed mid-way that there were way too many items being cleared than usual and stopped it, but some items have, indeed, been trashed forever.

I am now slowly figuring out what I have lost, first being my beloved Dashboard I had grown way more dependent on than I realized. For those of you that don’t use Macs, Dashboard is a function that can be called upon with one button that can be customized, and I had used the world clock feature (I customized to have three time zones: Israel, Japan, and New York) and the unit converter (good for quick currency conversions and weight and length conversions for baking). While I have discovered that there are hundreds of downloadable widgets for the Dashboard online, the ones I was using (and lost) are pre-installed widgets and are of course, not available for download.

I have always been a firm believer of backups but never thought to back up my Library folder. A lesson learned the hard way!

Much love,

I wonder if there’s a way for you to restore your deleted Library folder… I don’t exactly know what it is though (even with your thorough description). I do encourage you to look around online to fix the mistake 🙂
Once (and only once!) I formatted a memory card: which contained about half of my client’s wedding photos. I desperately searched around with google, and found that the contents of the card hadn’t been deleted by the format, but that the contents had been marked to be written-over the next time I went to shoot with it in a camera. So I recovered everything with a free little program 🙂
I worked with Macs for a few years when I first started as a video editor… but that was so long ago that I can’t think of how to help, sorry, except to encourage you to look around with google for a potential solution 🙂

I reformatted a memory card once too! I luckily had a very knowledgeable photographer for a co-worker that saved my day. He explained to me that the photos in the memory card are like stacks, and every new photo you take are randomly put in to the stack (hence get re-written), which I thought was a very visual and easy to understand! I’m glad you recovered everything, I still wasn’t able to even with my expert help!

I checked online for recovery programs and none of them were for free. I figure I could do without the dashboard, I just have to use a tiny bit of brain power now, actually subtracting or adding hours for time differences or memorizing certain weight and length conversions that I frankly should have a long time ago considering the times I’ve relied on my dashboard for the exact same thing!
