I finished reading “Bethlehem Road Murder” by Batya Gur that I mentioned in a post the other day. It was a bit difficult to get in to in the beginning, but I think that’s partially due to the fact that I needed to get used to the pace of reading a novel again. Get used to things being more detailed and involved and requiring more of a commitment than say the majority of the daily reading (and writing, for that matter) I do online. It was an interesting and satisfying read, giving me a glimpse in to a Israel I am not very familiar with, like an Ashkenazi and Mizrahi mixed neighborhood in Jerusalem and all its complications, or the history of kidnapped children of Yemenite immigrants.

But one thing I was a bit disappointed with as well as surprised was that there were more than a few typos, incorrect grammar, and phrases that were obviously wrong! I guess this is what I get for reading a translated version… but still! I wonder if typos are just as common in original Hebrew books as well?

This made me want to read a book solely to enjoy the beauty of words in the author’s native language. The box of books I shipped by sea mail from Japan back in February finally arrived last week, just in time! (Although I realized some of them are actually English translations of the original: “Prisoner of Love” from French or “One Hundred Years of Solitude” from Spanish, or “The Bastard of Istanbul” being written by English but not in the author’s native Turkish.)

Have a great weekend my friends,

これもあって、内容や展開よりも何よりも言葉の美しさを楽しめるような本が読みたくなりました。
それも作家の母国語で。
ちょうど先週、グッドタイミングで2月に日本から船便で送った本が届いたんです。楽しみ〜。
(しかし気付いたのはこの中にも翻訳された本が数冊あったこと。)
ちなみに私もっと日本語の本を読みたいのですが全然詳しくないので
何かお勧めがあったら是非教えてください!

では良い週末を!!

Much love,
Kaori
