1 March 2012 (Oat Bran and Oatmeal Flour)

March 1, 2012

I baked these cookies yesterday. I could hardly wait to take my first bite of what was no doubt going to be one of the most decadent cookies I have ever baked… but in reality, they tasted more like… healthy cookies.

Now, these cookies may be a lot of things, but healthy is not the first thing that comes to mind. The wonderful name says it all: Dark Chocolate and Toasted Pecan Cookies with Browned Butter. Sounds like a delicious crime, doesn’t it?? An unforgivable crime of browned butter and toasted pecans dancing around in my mouth, intertwining with oozing swirls of dark chocolate. But what I got instead was an overwhelming grainy, or wholesome, I can’t really describe it, taste that coated over everything else.

It turns out I had mistakenly used oat bran instead of oatmeal flour. Until this day I didn’t even know the existence of both, but I have learned the hard way that they are really worlds apart! The cookies have actually started to grown on me, but I consider them a completely different cookie from the original recipe. I will try the recipe again with the right flour soon!

Much love,
Kaori

Oh Lord! I started to panic when I read this! I have NEVER had anyone said they tasted healthy or “grainy.” Quite the opposite. But then I read what happened. I’m so sorry and hope you make them again with oatmeal flour this time. (I hardly ever buy it from the store. It is easy to put some whole oats in a blender or food processor and make your own. Cheaper too) They are so decadent and absolutely my favorite cookie in the whole world. They will be well worth you effort. I promise!

I’m so sorry I made you panic! I know my cookies did not do your original recipe ANY justice… all because of my mistake. I am definitely going to make them again, with oatmeal flour. I’m already looking forward to trying your gluten free cookie recipe too 🙂

      Don’t worry.
The cookies WERE delicious, and between me and my nephews they didn’t even lasted for 48 hours.
      K. has a tendency to see food in black and white (I think its her Japanese character).

I’m glad everyone loved the cookies my sweet, but the point here is the cookies I made weren’t the cookies Bettie intended them to be… which I will try baking soon 🙂
