February 26, 2012

My fever showed no signs of going down, so I took the day off today. I always remembered a friend of mine from high school telling me that this movie (the English title is “Memories of Matsuko”) was one of her all-time favorites, so when I saw a used version on sale when I was in Japan I picked it up immediately.

I watched it without hardly knowing anything about it other than the previews I saw when it came out in 2006, and was surprised by how heavy it was. It may have felt even more so because I was sick, but the movie was far from being a “light” source of entertainment. There were a few grand scale extravagant musical scenes as well as a cute nostalgic visual style overall, but it still weighed down on me pretty heavily.

But it doesn’t mean that I didn’t like it. This is the kind of movie that will get better with each viewing. I’m also interested in seeing it from the production aspect, since I used to work in the industry. I’m looking forward to seeing it again when I’m not sick.

Much love,
Kaori
