One of the first things I noticed in Israel was how coffee is taken in people’s homes. As I wrote in a post about the little daily things a little over a year ago, my general impression was that people either drank it שחור (shechor=black, or in another words Arabic style) or Nescafe, often abbreviated to Nes, which, you guessed it, is instant coffee. After a year of being here this general impression still remains pretty much the same. I must add that not everyone uses the “tiny sweetener tablets” I talked about in the old post. In many homes I was asked whether I wanted סוכרזית (sucrazit=the tablets) or “real sugar”. One friend showed me how he shakes coffee cream in an old plastic bottle to create foam – brilliant!

Drinking coffee in cafes and restaurants have proven to be another cultural experience. There are plenty of cafes, independent or chains, that serve drip-brewed coffee (that I still have yet to see in someone’s home) and various espresso-based drinks. And shockingly, among the lattes and cappuccinos it’s not rare to see “Nescafe” on the menu. I guess some people just really like their instant coffee.

In restaurants on the other hand, the kind of coffee available may depend on what kind of restaurant you are dining in. Yuval told me one time he was having a business meeting in a Western style cafe/restaurant in a posh district near Tel Aviv. When he asked for a cafe shechor, the waitress politely told him they don’t have it and one of the guys he was meeting with just laughed. “You thought you could get black coffee here?” was what he was thinking. But that moment got the meeting off to a nice friendly start, Yuval said.

Another time I was dining with friends at a Moroccan restaurant in Tel Aviv. A guy that joined us midway decided to just have a drink and asked the waitress for a cafe הפוך (hafuch=cafe latte) and was met with a apologetic shaking of the head. Only cafe shechor served here.

イスラエルに来て間もない時に気付いたことの一つに、コーヒーの飲み方がありました。約一年前イスラエルの日常のあれこれの記事で書いたように、私の大まかな印象はイスラエルでは大体 שחור式(シャホール=アラビア風のブラックコーヒー)もしくはネスカフェ式(「ネス」に省略されることが多い名前通りのインスタントコーヒー)の二通りでコーヒーが家庭で飲まれているということでした。

約一年たった今、その印象は変わっていません。ただ、一年前の記事で書いた「錠剤の甘味料」は全ての家庭では使われていないことはわかりました。「סוכרזית(スカルジット=錠剤の甘味料)もしくは本当の砂糖、どちらがいい?」と聞かれるのはめずらしいことではありません。また、ある友達はペットボトルにコーヒー用のクリームをいれ、シャカシャカ振る方法でフォームを作っていました。身近な道具で本格的なラテができちゃうのね〜。

でもカフェやレストランでコーヒーを飲むのはまた別です。イスラエルの多くのカフェでは(チェーンのものもそうでないものも)ドリップ式のコーヒーや様々なエスプレッソ飲料を飲むことができます。(いまだにドリップ式のコーヒーが家庭でつくられているのをみたことはないのですが。)そしてびっくりすることに、ラテやカプチーノなどと並んで「ネスカフェ」がメニューに登場することもめずらしくありません。インスタントコーヒーが好きな人は本当に好きなのですね!

逆にレストランでは、場所によって頼めるコーヒーの種類も違ってくるようです。ユバルがある時テルアビブ近郊のシャレた高級住宅街の西洋レストランでビジネスのミーティングに参加した時のこと。カフェ・シェホールを注文しようとしたらウェイトレスにないと断られミーティングの相手は笑ったそうです。「ここでブラック・コーヒーがあると思ったの?」と。でもこのおかげで、ミーテイングはとてもフレンドリーな雰囲気で進行できたとのこと。

またある時私は友達とモロッコ料理屋さんで食事をしました。途中で現れた友人がカフェ・הפוך(ハフー=カフェ・ラテ)を頼もうとすると、ここのウェイトレスは首を横に振りました。ここではカフェ・シャホールしかないよ、と。

    I am still enjoying your blog so much! I seriously think this needs to be published into a book!
    My coffee is shechor. I do like to sometimes put a pinch of ground cinnamon and sometimes ginger in it. Delicious! I probably drink too much coffee, but it doesn’t seem to keep me from sleeping or make me jittery, so I suppose it is OK.

    Anyway, Sara is now working in a place in Portsmouth, NH called “Breaking New Grounds”. A coffee place obviously. It also has many good bakery items, a multitute of coffees and flavors, teas, and even ice cream. You would love this place. She will be going back to New York in August. Back to school. Take care! Let us know if you make it to the states!

      Thanks Sammi!🙂 Seems like you like your coffee spicy. A total different drink from the coffee I know!

      The cafe where Sara is working sounds amazing. I’m having fun trying to imagine a grown-up Sara working as a barista! A nice independent cafe in the States sounds so nice… and I also miss the flavored coffees. I don’t see that much here (or in Japan, for that matter).

      I hope you and your family are enjoying the summer, I imagine it’s so pretty where you are. What I would do to be there right now!
