50 (Yom Kippur | ヨム・キプール)

September 17, 2010

Trees in the kibbutz | キブツの木

Starting from sundown today until sundown tomorrow is Yom Kippur, otherwise known as The Day of Atonement in the Jewish religion. During the 25 hour duration one is supposed to fast and pray and refrain from work of any kind. No driving, no talking on the phone, no cooking, no showering, no listening to music. No switching on / off of lights. All television and radio stations go off the air for this period too.

Yuval and I will spend the 25 hours in the home of friends among others not fasting, but will be careful to get there well before sundown to respect those that will.

Much love,

גמר חתימה טובה! I’m not fasting, naturally, though my significant other is. I wish I had a house full of people to entertain me while he and the rest of our neighborhood sleeps all day! Hope you guys have a nice weekend.

It must be hard for both of you when only one person is fasting! The deadness of the roads reminded me a little bit of お正月 in Japan (although it’s not a taboo to go out like it is here). I hope you survived the weekend, hamuda!

Wow, Kaorin, I learned about Yom Kippur just last Saturday, as Richard’s cousins are also Jewish. I had no idea about refraining from any other activities though!

But I was invited to a buffet they prepared and I had soooooo much food, it was great!

Hey hiroks! I actually think this is the best time of year to be staying with a Jewish family, especially in terms of learning Jewish customs and culture since it is so highly concentrated with holidays – Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot.

That’s great you indulged in tasty homemade food — isn’t that the best??
