9 (Daniela Spector, Live shows in Israel)

June 10, 2010

Daniela Spector

I had the pleasure of seeing Daniela Spector live yesterday. She had a wonderful voice and a tranquil presence. More than anything though, through her music I could sense that the person who told me about the show and I have a similar taste in music, and that we can become good friends. And that made me happy. I could also tell that understanding the lyrics is essential in truly appreciating Daniela’s music. So now I have an exciting alternative method of learning Hebrew to look forward to. I don’t know how long it will take me before I fully understand the subtle and intricate meanings some lyrics may hold, but singing a beautiful song over and over again is not such a bad way to learn a language, don’t you think?

While I’m on the subject of live music, this is kind of old news already but the Pixies canceled their show in Tel Aviv following the Gaza aid flotilla raid. This New York Times article describes how live shows in Israel have never been just about the music: “The more high-profile the artist, the more Israel felt like a normal country, less defined by conflict; each performance was taken as a sign of global acceptance that Israelis so crave.

I also read in the article that the promoter spent more than 10 years trying to bring the Pixies to Israel. 10 years. Having worked in the entertainment industry I can only imagine how much effort that has taken, only to have the artists themselves back out last minute.

In Tokyo it is unimaginable for an artist to cancel a show for political reasons. As an avid fan of a band or artist, I would take something like that personally. How can you not?

Much love,
